“Once upon a time, in a peaceful town, there lived a little boy named Timmy. Timmy loved to play outside, and one day, he found a strange, shiny object. It wasn’t a toy or anything he recognized. It was a tool, something his grandfather used in his workshop. Timmy, curious as ever, started to play with it, adjusting it, learning how it worked. Over time, Timmy didn’t just play with the tool, he mastered it, and it helped him do wonderful things.”

The above is an example of a TinyStory. TinyStories are short narratives generated by large language models, such as GPT-3.5 or GPT-4, that are written using a limited vocabulary accessible to 3-4-year-olds.

Unveiling Artificial Intelligence

This tool in Timmy’s story is a metaphor for Artificial Intelligence (AI). Like a tool, AI has the potential to make life easier, safer, more productive, and more entertaining. It’s a technology that can understand human language, recognize patterns, make predictions, and even learn from its mistakes. But AI, in its current state, is like a newborn child, needing guidance, teaching, and lots of examples to learn how to perform tasks properly and ethically.

In February, Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former Director of AI and Autopilot Vision at Tesla, returned to OpenAI. On July 23, Karpathy released a model called Baby LLaMA, which can generate simple text responses to user input. Baby LLaMA, and other large language models, are trained with large datasets of text from various sources, similarly to how humans learn language from practice and experience. Baby LLaMA represents an achievement to simplify the dataset used to train a large language model.

Before the release of Baby LLaMA, large language models required a cloud-based solution to operate as they require vast amounts of computing power. Baby LLaMA, while not as sophisticated as larger models like OpenAI’s cloud-based ChatGPT, can operate on consumer electronics like the iPhone. This initiative represents a significant advancement in making AI technology more accessible and diversified.

Education Paradigms in Light of AI: A Ken Robinson Perspective

The late Sir Ken Robinson, an internationally recognized leader in developing human potential, argued in his renowned 2010 TED Talk that the current education system isn’t conducive to fostering creativity and acknowledging multiple types of intelligence. He advocated for an education paradigm that nurtures creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking rather than suppressing them.

One of GPT-4’s most significant achievements is its performance on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT), a benchmark creativity test. This performance hints at AI’s potential to enhance creativity on both an individual and societal level.
